Manuka School's Local Curriculum

Manuka Primary School’s Local Curriculum Development

We have spent two years developing our local curriculum that sits alongside the New Zealand National Curriculum.  This document is still a work in progress and will be shared with our school community upon completion.  It has been a process that has involved consultation with the staff and BoT  This is to ensure that everyone has a shared understanding of the specific needs of our students here at Manuka Primary School. The Local Curriculum is a document that will drive student learning at Manuka Primary School.  During the development of the document, we have taken time to discuss and form documents to show:

  • Our beliefs around what each learning area looks like at Manuka – our Essence Statements
  • Our aspirations for what academic skills a Y6 pupil will have when they leave our school
  • Our vision for what social skills a Y6 pupil will have when they leave our school
  • What our learning environment will look like, sound like and feel like in order to promote student engagement and learning

The development of the Manuka Local Curriculum enabled us to identify professional development required for the staff and new resources  we needed to develop in order to ensure that our students succeed and become confident lifelong learners.  Examples of these are:

  • The development of the Manuka School Attributes (see PDF)
  • Our Kete, what does learning look like at Manuka Primary?  (see PDF)
  • Our Life Long Learner Framework (see PDF)
  • PD around the teaching of reading and spelling
  • Our Spelling Handbook
  • Our Handwriting HandbookThe task has been huge, and is still evolving but the impact on teaching and learning at Manuka has been positive and proactive.:
  • Professional development has been identified and attended both in school and out.

The teachers have a shared vision for our students.  This is evident through our School Vision Statement, and the natural and direct links made in our Charter, Local Curriculum, and Appraisal System.
